Meare is a marshland village in typical Somerset "Rhineland" country, standing on the site of pre-historic lake dwellings. The site of the lake-village is marked by groups of mounds and reached along Meare Way.

"Memorandum - After a prayer of thanksgiving for the glorious victory obtained by the Allies over the French commanded by Buonaparte in person June 18 1815 at Waterloo in Flanders, on Sunday July 23rd 1815 a collection was made for the benefit of the Widows & Orphans of the brave soldiers who fell in the Battle, which amounted to £3-11-7 1/2 & at Godney Chapel on Sunday July 30th 1815. £1-6-0
